Through the narrative structure of video games, I analyse three stages of life: childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Each stage has levels to overcome.
In childhood, the first cracks begin to appear; in adolescence, we struggle to overcome them and change; as adults, the harshness of reality and the magnitude of the ‘big bosses’ often lead to disillusionment.
Together with a group of teenagers aged between sixteen and twenty-two, I compare my youthful utopian ideals with those of today. Is it possible to do anything in the face of events that leave us feeling powerless? What are the monsters we must defeat, and will we ever be able to do so? What are the perfect worlds we can dream of, and will we ever be able to create them in reality? How many lives do we have left to do so?
